This courseware and the accompanying Online Lab provide instruction in the basic and more advanced elements of word processing using Microsoft Word 2019 for document production. Word features are applied to the production of a variety of business documents, including email, memos, business letters, business reports, and manuscripts. To use this textbook and the Online Lab successfully, students should be able to key alphanumeric text at an average rate of 40 words per minute (WPM) with a maximum of one error per minute.

The emphasis of this courseware is to develop a student's keyboarding speed and accuracy skills, a firm command of Word features, and the ability to prepare documents quickly, accurately, and with correct formatting.

About the Paradigm Keyboarding Online Lab

The Paradigm Keyboarding Online Lab is a web-based learning management system (LMS). The Online Lab gives students access to their course activities from any web-connected, Windows-based computer.

Instructors also have access to all student work and scores by launching and logging into the Online Lab.

All Online Lab activities are referenced in the textbook, individually numbered, and clearly identified in the left margin of the text. The activities in the Online Lab include exercises, timings, and documents. In addition, the Online lab includes Word tutorials.

Lab activities

Exercises

Session work begins with exercises that include warm-up drills and timed short drills. Warm-up drills prepare the student for the document production activities that follow. The timed short drills provide students an opportunity to enhance their keying speed or accuracy.

Timings

Timings are an important tool in assessing keying proficiency, and the Online Lab provides immediate feedback on speed and accuracy for all timings. Sessions include combinations of 1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute timings. Instructors can adjust the minimum-error and target WPM counts for timings as desired.

Document Activities

For each document activity, students launch the activity in the Online Lab, complete the activity as specified by the easy-to follow, step-by-step instructions in the textbook, and then submit the document for assessment. The launch page for each document activity in the Online Lab includes a textbook icon and a reference to the corresponding textbook page number(s).

The Online Lab automatically manages the files for each document activity. When the student clicks the Launch Activity button, Word opens in the Online Lab window and retrieves the base document used in the activity. The Online Lab also automatically saves all files created in the document activities for future reference.

There are two types of document activities: checked activities and unchecked activities.

Word Tutor

The Online Lab includes skills-based tutorials that provide interactive, guided training and measured practice to support Word skills taught in the courseware. Word Tutor content expands the skills training provided in the textbook and applied in the Online Lab activities.

Grade Book and Reports

The Online Lab includes a grade book that automatically documents the grades for all completed timings and checked document activities. Instructors can add other activities to the grade book and then enter grades for those activities. Instructors can also edit grades. All grade data may be easily exported to other learning management systems.

The Online Lab also includes reports designed to allow students and instructors to assess student progress through the courseware. The reports include the Prescriptive Analysis report, the Progress report, the Timings Performance report, the Average Timings Performance report, and the Document Performance report.

Instructor Resources

The Keyboarding Online Lab is a web-based learning management system that lets instructors easily deliver customized keyboarding courses and efficiently communicate with enrolled students. The Online Lab includes extensive reports documenting student activity and a grade book for assigning grades and tracking student progress.

Additional instructor support is available through the Instructor eResources link in the Online Lab and includes a sample syllabus, reference material and instructional support for each session, a theory quiz, general suggestions on teaching keyboarding, a set of PowerPoint presentations with lecture notes, rubrics for evaluating unchecked document activities, as well as content for pretest and posttest timings. The pretest and posttest timings are completed in the Online Lab.
