School is starting, pumpkin is everywhere, and the days are getting shorter and cooler. As I sit and admire these unique qualities of autumn, I feel a little clichй as I think, We as individuals are just like these trees. We are changing, growing, and preparing for what’s next. It’s poetic and clichй, but it’s also scientific. All summer, with the long hours of sunlight and a good supply of liquid water, plants are busy making and storing food, and growing. However, during winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. And then we see the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. So what does that mean for us as humans? Well, we, like a tree and its leaves, go through the year and learn how to survive and thrive. As part of surviving we get through each day, and hopefully, at the end of the day we are happy. How do we get there? Like the trees, we learn:
  • Adapting to your environment can increase your success. Be aware of different factors that bolster your attitude, relationships, and motivation.
  • Changing, as the colors of the leaves do, can bring to light different ways to get through your day to day. As you see yourself changing you can become a better leader, communicator, and self-manager.
  • Working all year will prepare for us for different phases of life. We combine the cycles we go through to become stronger and stronger.
  • Losing your leaves is okay. Whatever we have gone through in the past, can be shaken off. A tree does this to survive and you can too. You can take it a step further and learn from your failures and become a stronger person.
  • Healthy living supports positive change in life. This applies to our minds too. We store what we learn as a tree stores resources, and we get through the seasons replenishing and building on our knowledge and energy.
As we are a few days away from the official start of autumn, remember that change is good and learning to grow from that change is even better. What other skills or qualities can you learn as we shift from summer to autumn?
